MIMICO MOUNTAINEERS OUTLAST WHITBY WARRIORS ON HOME FLOOR

The Whitby Warriors travelled to Mimico Sunday night and threw everything they could at the undefeated Mountaineers. A strong goaltending performance from Nate Whittom and big offensive games from Finn Thomson and Mark Watters allowed Mimico to win 10-9.

Down 1-0 after allowing a power play goal, Finn Thomson led a three-goal Mimico run where he added three points to his already impressive season total. Lucas Littlejohn scored, and contributed an assist of his own on Whitby goals 53 seconds apart, but then Thomson registered his fourth point of the period on Mark Watters’ first goal of the night, which gave Mimico a 4-3 lead.

The teams traded pairs of goals in the second. Jake Darlison and Jack Oldman’s second goals of the game gave Whitby its first lead since opening the scoring. But, nearing the end of the period, the second goals for Watters and Thomson restored the home side’s lead and carried it into the third.

Following Luke Robinson’s tying goal, Watters scored twice in a three-goal Mountaineers run spanning 2:10. A power play marker from Ryan Langille and Littlejohn’s second brought Whitby within one. Again though, it was Thomson answering 35 seconds later with the eventual game-winning goal. Mimico improve to 4-0 with a 10-9 win.

Finn Thomson (3+5) and Mark Watters (4+2) combined for 14 points. Thomson now has 29 on the season (in 4 games), tying him with Toronto’s Greg Palmer for third in the league. Nate Whittom stopped 50 of Whitby’s 59 shots.

Jake Darlison led Whitby’s offence with five points (2+3). Jack Oldman (2+2) had four, and Lucas Littlejohn (2+1) ended the night with three.
