MIMICO MOUNTAINEERS WIN LATEST RIVALRY GAME WITH ORANGEVILLE NORTHMEN

It was a typical game between the Orangeville Northmen and Mimico Mountaineers Friday night at Tony Rose Arena: hard battles for every loose ball, fast pace transition, and points from the usual cast on each side. The game also featured six Syracuse Orange players across both teams. In the end, the two on the visitors’ bench bested their brethren 8-6, keeping Mimico’s record perfect at 3-0.

The first period featured Syracuse with Joey Spallina and Trey Deere combining on the opening three goals. Deere’s second was a beautiful fake in front of the net before he spun back and shot past his defender. Their field teammate, and Mimico captain, Finn Thomson scored twice on the power play in the opening period, but Orangeville retained a 4-2 lead.

Mimico’s third power play chance came early in the second, and they capitalized again – this time from Lucas Dudemaine. Mark Watters, Thomson and Isiah Moran-Weekes all followed with goals in a Mimico run spanning 4:47. Watters would add another before the end of the period ending a 5-1 period for the Mountaineers who led 7-5.

The intensity picked up in the third, as did the penalties. Some pretty passing by the Northmen power play found Deere all alone on the crease to convert a quick-stick pass. Dudemaine matched that goal, which eventually capped an 8-6 Mimico win.

Lucas Dudemaine led the Mimico offense with five points (2+3). Justin Lee contributed five assists. Finn Thomson (3+1) was held to four points, despite scoring a hat trick. He is now just 13 points off the all-time Mountaineers scoring record. Mark Watters (2+2) also had four points. Nate Whittom made 51 saves including one off the left toe going cross-crease to deny Trey Deere late in the third for the win.

Liam Matthews (1+4) was the top points-getter for Orangeville. Trey Deere (3+1) scored his second straight hat trick. Zack Richards was solid in his first start of the season turning aside 44 of Mimico’s 52 shots.
