Northmen Remain Undefeated with a Commanding 12-4 Victory over FATIGUED Athletics
It’s not often a non-tournament lacrosse team plays three games in three nights, but that’s what happened to the St Catharines Athletics on Sunday. Not only battling their own fatigue, they needed to do so in the heat of Orangeville’s Tony Rose Arena, against the only remaining undefeated team in the OJLL – the Northmen. The odds were simply too much for the Athletics to overcome, as they dropped the game 12-4 to finish the week 2-2.
Orangeville led 3-0 after the first period. Despite playing two less games, Orangeville has scored three more goals than St Catharines on the season, good enough for first in the OJLL. On Sunday night, it was their transition that flexed their muscles. Through the first two periods, the Northmen had put four transition goals past Athletics’ rookie netminder Ty Wilson, who made his first career OJLL start.
Already trailing 5-0, Zackary Toll and Noah Snyder opened the scoring for St Kitts. The pair would connect later in the game on Keaton Zavitz’ goal to open the scoring in the third. At that point Orangeville led 7-2, and capped the victory with a four goal run, including three in just under five minutes. Koleton Marquis scored two of those, while adding an assist in the run, helping the Northmen remain undefeated with a 12-4 victory.
Koleton Marquis led all runners with six points (3 goals, 3 assists). Joey Spallina added five (1 goal, 4 assists) to his season total, finishing the night in second place in OJLL points. Amos Whitcomb and Nate Ruff each scored twice. Chris Origlieri needed just 38 saves for his sixth win, leading the OJLL. His 4.79 also makes him the league leader, by over two goals.
The two teams will rematch in St Catharines on Wednesday evening.
