When the Peterborough Lakers and Six Nations Arrows met a week ago (May 26), it took just 13 seconds of overtime for Louis Alfred to win the game 9-8, and keep the Lakers winless on the season. Travelling to the Iroquois Lacrosse Arena on Sunday evening, the Lakers opened the gap in the second period and did not require extra time to down the Arrows 11-6 for their first win of the season.

Ben Trumble opened the scoring for Peterborough on the power play, and would end the period the same way with seven seconds remaining. Between his goals, Liam Vollans scored his first career OJLL goal to put the Lakers up two, but both were answered by Oneniotekowa Maracle and Mitchell VanEvery. Peterborough led 3-2 after the first.

Reece DiCicco’s goal 24 seconds into the second wasn’t officially a power play goal; coming three seconds after a late first period minor expired. But Michael Blaymires later in the frame was. Zack Thompson scored 22 seconds later, eventually adding three points to a Lakers’ four-goal run. Daylin John-Hill got one back for Six Nations, but Vollans had the response in the final 90 seconds.

Six Nations took two five minute majors – one late in the second, and another midway through the third – both of which turned into Thompson goals. Davin Bomberry scored a power play marker of his own, capping a mini-two-goal run from the Arrows. But DiCicco’s late goal sealed the 11-6 Peterborough victory meaning the only winless team left in the OJLL is Kitchener-Waterloo (0-6).

Deacon Knott stopped 43 of 49 Arrows’ shots for the win. Zack Thompson’s six points (3 goals, 3 assists) led Peterborough in goals, but it was Daniel Clark’s nine points (1 goal, 8 assists) that led all runners. Three other Lakers scored multiple goals – Ben Trumble, Liam Vollans and Reece DiCicco.

All five Six Nations goals came from different players. Thunder Hill led with three assists.

It’s a quick turnaround for the Lakers, who host the Toronto Beaches (3-3) on Monday night. Six Nations have nearly a full week off, travelling to Brampton (1-4) on Friday.
