Whitby Warriors Score Three In 15 Seconds Securing First Win
Iroquois Sports Park has become a tough place for visiting teams to play against the Whitby Warriors over the past few seasons. On Tuesday night they welcomed in the Burlington Blaze, who have also struggled out of the gate. Being able to stop the Blaze offence, Whitby took its first win of the season 9-5.
Minutes after Chuck Rawson opened the scoring midway through the first, Whitby’s Ryan Langille, Owen Lee and Jack Oldman ran three straight transition plays – the latter two off faceoffs – to score three times in 15 seconds and lead 3-1 through the first period.
Langille opened the scoring again in the second, this time shorthanded. And again his goal kickstarted a three-goal run (this one over 6:30). It was only a matter of time before Alex Marinier scored, doing so 20 seconds after Lucas Littlejohn. Langille completed his hat trick with just over a minute to play in the period giving Whitby a 7-2 lead after two.
Burlington not only got an early goal from Brinley Wilson, but the Blaze would also kill off three straight penalties through the middle of the period. With just under four minutes to play, on the power play, Will MacLeod scored for the Blaze. Langille added another to his strong night before the teams traded goals in the final minute. The Whitby Warriors win their first game of the season 9-5.
Four goals were not only the first for Ryan Langille on the season, but also a career-high. Five other players scored single goals. Other with multiple points were Jack Oldman (1+1), Owen Lee (1+1) and Carson Christy (0+2).
It was an uncharacteristically quiet night for Burlington’s offence that managed only 34 shots. Chuck Rawson (2+1) led the team in goals, but Will MacLeod (1+3) topped the team with four points. Cal Leaver-Peryra stopped 42 of 51 shots in the loss.
