Arrows Extinguish the Blaze in a 12-7 showdown
The Oakville Buzz loss on Wednesday, paired with the Burlington Blaze win put the latter in a position to enter the weekend as one of two unbeaten teams in the OJLL – along with the Orangeville Northmen (entered Friday 4-0). Standing in their way; the Six Nations Arrows, who got out to an early lead and never trailed, eventually handing the Blaze their first loss of the season, 12-7 the final.
All of Burlington’s first period offense came from Coltrane Tyson who scored three times in the opening frame, giving him nine goals on the season. All three were needed to tie the score after Six Nations’ opened the period with a pair. They’d get three more from a late run including Brendan Anderson’s second of the game, Daylin John-Hill’s second of the season, and a shorthanded goal from Oneniotekowa Maracle to lead 6-3.
As they did in the first, the Arrows scored twice in the second, also from Hills – Thunder and Ross. Those were matched by goals from Burlington’s English brothers, Ty and Brooks. But another late pair, both the firsts of the season for Mitchell VanEvery and Blayze Becker, won the Arrows the period 4-2, and gave them a 10-5 lead.
Becker added two more in the third to complete the hat trick, while Tyson scored his fourth. All told, the teams split the final frame 2-2, as Six Nations grabbed the victory, 12-7, handing the Blaze their first loss of the season.
Cole Gervais took his first OJLL loss, being replaced in the second period making way for Connor Waller to make his Junior A debut. Waller allowed just four goals on 20 shots in 34:31 of action. Coltrane Tyson led Burlington with four goals and Josh Rosa added four assists.
Blayze Becker’s hat trick topped the Arrows’ scorers. Oneniotekowa Maracle had four points (1 goal, 3 assists) as did Davin Bomberry (4 assists). Ethan Robertson went wire-to-wire, stopping 61 of 68 Blaze shots for his first win of the season.
Both teams will play home games on Sunday: the Arrows will host the Peterborough Lakers (0-5) at the ILA, and the Blaze will welcome the Mimico Mountaineers (2-2) to ‘The Oven’.
