Historic Orangeville Northmen Run Continues With Win Over Toronto Beaches
Only five teams in Junior A history can claim they won 12 straight games to open a season. That is, until the Orangeville Northmen did it on Sunday night, 17-9 over the Toronto Beaches. 12 straight games; 9 straight goals.
That’s how it happened – a nine goal run in the first period. Matt Collison did open the scoring for Toronto on the power play, but then six different goal scorers and 11 different players with points, including goaltender Chris Origlieri’s assist, had the Northmen on top 9-1 after one. Koleton Marquis had five points, including his fourth hat trick of the season.
The second was much closer. Once again the Beaches opened the scoring, but this time the ensuing Orangeville response was just a pair of goals. Over the next 10 minutes Toronto went on a 5-1 run with Collison completing his hat trick with a power play goal. The beach boys were down 13-7 heading for the final frame.
Trey Deere added a pair of goals to the Northmen total, which ended 17-9.
Both Trey Deere (4 goals, 2 assists) and Koleton Marquis (4 goals, 5 assists) ended the night with four goals. Joey Spallina (3 goals, 4 assists) also had a hat trick. Nine goals allowed off 56 shots is the most allowed by Chris Origlieri since allowing 10 against Mimico in the second game of the season.
Matt Collison finished the game with 4 goals (and 1 assist).
Both teams will be back in action on Tuesday; the Northmen will travel to the Drummond Street Bowl to face the Mimico Mountaineers (7-4) while the Toronto Beaches will be at home to the Peterborough Lakers (2-8).
