HORSMAN THE OT HERO AGAIN HELPING ORANGEVILLE WIN IN PETERBOROUGH

Having already locked up first place in the OJLL standings, the Orangeville Northmen travelled to Peterborough on Monday night. The Lakers were not only riding a four-game win streak, but also 5-1 at home in their last six games coming into the matchup. Peterborough nearly extended both streaks with strong second and third periods, but the Northmen’s Bowie Horsman was the hero in overtime, helping Orangeville to a 13-12 win.

After opening the scoring in the first minute, Peterborough gave up three power play opportunities in the first half of the period. Bowie Horsman scored Orangeville’s lone goal during the stretch, although Trey Deere added a shorthanded marker on an ensuing Northmen penalty. Following Sam Trumble’s tying goal, with just over two minutes to play the Hornheads scored three more goals before the end of the period to lead 5-2 after one.

Daniel Clark scored a power play goal for the Lakers five minutes into the second. However, Deere then completed his hat trick with back-to-back goals. His second was followed 34 seconds later by Jaden Ciappara. As Orangeville did in the first, Peterborough closed out the final three minutes of the second scoring three goals, but still trailing 9-7 heading into the third.

Clark registered five points in the third period alone, including scoring during a three-goal in 2:11 run five minutes into the third. When Joey Spallina scored his second of the period with 1:11 to play, it tied the game at 11. In the final minute, Nicholas Roode scored on the power play what looked like the winning goal. However, coming off the faceoff win and time out Deere took a pass from Spallina, scoring with three seconds to play and sending the game to overtime.

Nearing the midway mark of the scheduled 10 minute extra frame, Horsman took the ball, wheeled over the top, and fired a sidearm shot into the top right corner winning the game for Orangeville 13-12 – Peterborough’s third OT game of the season (1-2).

Joey Spallina’s spectacular season continued with 10 points (4+6) – the fourth time this season he’s hit double-digits in a game. Trey Deere was right behind with nine (5+4). The Northmen’s overtime win was their second of the season. Bowie Horsman (2+1 Monday) scored both overtime game winners.

Daniel Clark led Peterborough with an eight point night (2+6). Nicholas Roode was right behind with six (3+3), including his seventh hat trick of the season.

Both teams have one game remaining in the regular season – Peterborough will end their season in Whitby on Tuesday night. Orangeville hosts Brampton on Wednesday in the OJLL game of the week, streaming live on YouTube.
