MIMICO MOUNTAINEERS DRAW FIRST BLOOD IN CROMBIE CUP SERIES WITH TORONTO BEACHES

The Crombie Cup is awarded to the season series winner between the Toronto Beaches and Mimico Mountaineers, in remembrance of Greg Crombie, a prominent builder in the history of both organizations. On Monday night, the first game of the 2024 series kicked off at Ted Reeve Arena. At one point the Mountaineers scored nine straight goals over two periods to take a 13-8 win, handing Toronto their first regulation loss of the season.

Mimico’s power play has been a strength all season long and was again Monday. Midway through the first period Finn Thomson opened the scoring with his league leading tenth extra strength goal. He’d follow with a second later in the period, but not before four different Beaches players – Matt Collison, AJ Nikolic, Will Sheehan and newcomer, former Oakville Buzz, Eric McDonald – combined for four goals in the period. Toronto led 4-2 after the first.

Eoin MacKay stretched that lead pushing transition on an outlet pass from starting goaltender Thomas Kiazyk, his second assist of the game. That’s when Mimico took over. Isaiah Moran-Weekes scored three times and added two assists over the next ten minutes during a six-goal stretch for the visitors, eventually ending the period leading 8-5.

Opening the third, Alex Roussel sandwiched goals around a power play marker from Moran-Weekes. With just under nine minutes to play in regulation, and his Beaches down by six, Will Sheehan ran off a natural hat trick in 4:07 with all three goals assisted by Matt Collison. Lucas Dudemaine closed out the game scoring back-to-back goals, giving Mimico a 13-8 victory.

Both Isaiah Moran-Weekes (4+3) and Finn Thomson (3+4) had seven points for Mimico. Lucas Dudemaine was not far behind with six (2+4) and Justin Lee added five assists.

Will Sheehan (4+2) scored his first hat trick since being traded from the Oakville Buzz. Four goals give him 34, just one ahead of Finn Thomson for the OJLL lead. Matt Collison (1+4) finished with five, and Willem Firth added four assists.
