Orangeville Offense Combine For Big Night In Home Opener
It took their third game of the season, but the Orangeville Northmen finally returned to Tony Rose arena for their home opener Sunday night against Kitchener-Waterloo. Opening a stretch where seven of eight games are at home, the Northmen worked an early big lead they’d never relinquish, doubling up KW 14-7.
The first period was all Orangeville with Cam Sanderson opening the scoring 3:21 into the game. Liam Matthews and Joey Spallina assisted on his goal – that pair would score twice more each to lead 5-0 after the first. The trio combined for 11 points in the frame.
Kitchener-Waterloo found the back of the net in the second, four times on the power play. Dylan Lee and 2023 first overall pick Clark Dunford separated goals by 47 seconds. Dunford would add a second with Mailkye Good later in the period, as would Chris Rathwell. With Rathwell in the box, however, Trey Deere scored to close out the second for his seventh point and second goal of the game.
Deere would complete his hat trick in the opening minute of the final frame. Dunford and Good both scored in the period as well, but so did Sanderson and Guerin Jennings (another power play marker) to give Orangeville their second win of the season, 14-7.
Three Northmen had hat tricks and massive points nights led by Joey Spallina (3+7), Liam Matthews (3+5) and Trey Deere (3+5). Cam Sanderson (2+6) also finished with eight points. Those four combined for 34 points in the game.
Clark Dunford (3+2) led the Kitchener-Waterloo offense. He had a hand in five of KW’s seven goals. Malikye Good scored twice and added an assist.
