WHITBY WINS THIRD STRAIGHT OVER MIMICO, MOVE INTO THIRD IN STANDINGS

It’s said that ‘good things come in threes’. If so, Tuesday was a great night for Whitby Warriors’ fans. The 2022 Minto Cup winners defended home floor against the Mimico Mountaineers by scoring three goals in each period, while allowing just three, for their third straight win 9-3, to move into third in the OJLL standings.

Despite Mimico outscoring Whitby 22-14 in the first, Whitby led 3-0 after 20 minutes. Goals from the Owens – Lee and Tapper – and a power play marker from veteran Lucas Littlejohn provided the damage for the home side.

In the second Finn Thomson sandwiched a pair of goals around Littlejohn’s second, the latter of which the Mimico veteran scored shorthanded. Thomson would assist on Alex Roussel’s goal to bring the Mountaineers within one. Tapper’s second and Littlejohn’s hat trick goal closed out the period, which the Warriors led 6-3.

A pair of third period transition goals from rookie Treysen Stewart stretched the lead further, and the 9-6 win was capped by Jack Oldman scoring with five minutes left in regulation.

Lucas Littlejohn’s hat trick was his fourth in eight games. Jack Oldman (1+3) led the Warriors in points, with Treysen Stewart (2+1), Gabriel Sorichetti (0+3) and Littlejohn right behind. Ethan Harwood stopped 52 of 55 shots in the win.

Finn Thomson provided nearly all of Mimico’s offense (2+1). Alex Roussel had two points (1+1). Three goals is the lowest goal-scoring output for Mimico since a 10-3 loss on August 1 during the modified season, also to Whitby.
