THOMAS KIAZYK SCORES HELPING TORONTO BEACHES TO SEVENTH WIN
The Toronto Beaches boasted two of the top five goals scorers in the OJLL, two of the top three points-scorers and a perfect record heading into Thursday’s home matchup against the Brampton Excelsiors – their fifth straight road game. As if the Beaches offense wasn’t intimidating enough, even goaltender Thomas Kiazyk scored in the 12-7 win, Toronto’s seventh straight.
Peyton Booth kicked off his best OJLL game with a goal eight minutes into the first. After Liam Aston made it 2-0, Nolan Byrne got Brampton on the board. Toronto would close out the period with goals from Willem Firth and Aston’s second in 1:20 to lead 4-1 after one.
Two goals in the first two minutes pulled the Excelsiors within one. Firth and Byrne then traded goals within 27 seconds. Hunter Lubiniecki’s power play goal led a 3-1 close to the period for Toronto with Booth and Byrne scoring their hat trick goals. Toronto still led 8-5 heading into the final frame.
Another early goal from the Excelsiors (Bowie Horsman) pulled them within two. Less than a minute later Hamish McPherson’s second of the season killed any Brampton momentum. With just over five minutes remaining, Firth scored again. Despite Darcy Thompson’s quick response, Booth would find an answer and then, in the final minute, Thomas Kiazyk made one of his 39 saves on the night, grabbed the ball and tossed it down floor for his first OJLL goal, and a 12-7 Toronto win.
The usual suspects led the way for the Beaches; Willem Firth (3+3) with six points, extending his OJLL lead in points to 10 (54 in 7 games) and goals to nine (27). Matt Collison (1+5) also had six points. Right behind was Greg Palmer’s five assists, and Peyton Booth’s first career hat trick (3+2).
Nolan Byrne (3+1) scored his second hat trick of the season and now has a goal in six straight games. Darcy Thompson contributed two goals, and Erich Acton three assists. Brampton’s next six games are at home, starting Friday June 7 against Whitby.
