BRAMPTON EXCELSIORS MOVE INTO SECOND PLACE WITH ROAD WIN IN PETERBOROUGH

The Peterborough Lakers had an entire week to stew on their 15-7 home loss to the Toronto Beaches in week two. On Monday, they welcomed the Brampton Excelsiors to Peterborough Memorial Centre looking for a better result. It was a tighter game, but a four-goal second period helped Brampton to a 10-7 victory.

After Dante Bowen opened the scoring for Brampton, Peterborough’s Nicholas Roode kicked off a three-goal spurt in 3:25 where he also added two assists. Before the end of the period Brampton would answer with three of their own with Bowie Horsman scoring once and adding an assist to put the Excelsiors up 4-3 after one.

Four minutes into the second, Brampton scored again. And, again, it was the first of three straight with Nolan Byrne and Darcy Thompson grabbing a pair of assists each. Near the midway mark of the period, Colby Wood scored for the Lakers to stop what was six straight spanning two periods. Byrne would add the Excelsiors’ fourth of the frame, putting the visitors up 8-4 heading into the final period.

Horsman and Byrne capped Brampton’s scoring in the third, with goals separated by 29 seconds. A late three-goal run from Peterborough, including a pair from Roode, would not be enough as Brampton held on for a 10-7 win and a share of second place. The Lakers three-game home stand to start the season comes to an end having lost all three.

Nolan Byrne led the Excelsiors in scoring with five points (2+3). Other multi-goal scorers included Bowie Horsman (2+2), Nolan Marshall (2+0) and Colby DeMora (2+0). Connor O’Toole needed 36 saves for his fourth win of the season. After leading the OJLL in minutes played last season, he has now played 359, just one back of Burlington’s Cal Leaver-Peryra for this year’s lead.

Peterborough was led in points by Nicholas Roose (3+2). Colby Wood was right behind with three (2+1). Three others had two.
