Defensive Battle In Peterborough Ends In Burlington Blaze Victory

When the Burlington Blaze scores goals, they tend to do so in runs. Even without one of their most dangerous offensive weapons, Coltrane Tyson, that was still the case when they travelled to Peterborough Sunday night. Overall, goals were hard to come by for both teams but nine different players combined for goals in the 7-5 Burlington win.

Zack Thompson led the Lakers in points last season, one off 100, and is doing so again this year. His eleventh of the season opened the scoring before back-to-back goals from the Blaze. Nate Sage responded to Will MacLeod’s goal in 41 seconds, but it would be nearly a full nine minutes later before Daniel Clark scored to give Peterborough back the lead. Burlington’s top scorer Alex Marinier then retied the game, and 21 seconds later, Ty English’s second of the period put the Blaze ahead 4-3.

MacLeod, who had three points in the first, added three more in the second, including scoring his second of the game. Ryan Brooks had the other two, with his second coming in the final minute to put Burlington up 7-3 after two.

Peterborough netminder Deacon Knott stopped all 10 shots faced in the third, and also got in on the offense finding Ben Trumble in transition early in the period. Trumble would then help set up Reece DiCicco for the second Lakers goal of the period, but that’s as close as they’d get with Burlington winning their sixth of the season, 7-5 to keep pace with Mimico for third in the OJLL standings – one game behind Oakville.

Will MacLeod led all runners with six points (2 goals, 4 assists). Ryan Brooks had four (2 goals, 2 assists). Cole Gervais stopped 39 of 44 shots for his fifth win of the season.

His counterpart, Deacon Knott, saved 46 of 53 Burlington offerings. All of Peterborough’s goals were scored from five different players. Zack Thompson had three points (1 goal, 2 assists).

Burlington will return home to ‘The Oven’ Wednesday night looking to hand the Orangeville Northmen (9-0) their first loss of the season. Meanwhile, it’s nearly a full week off for the Lakers who will travel to Brampton (2-6) on Friday.
