PETERBOROUGH LAKERS HANG ON TO SPLIT SEASON SERIES WITH ST CATHARINES
The St Catharines Athletics ended a five-game home stand (where they went 4-1) travelling to their furthest opponent Monday. Despite a strong second game from Thunder Hill, Nicholas Roode powered the Peterborough Lakers to a 10-9 win, their second in a row.
Nicholas Roode scored twice in the first period, including opening the scoring in the first minute. Tye Steenhuis scored, and added an assist for St Catharines. With just under four minutes to play, Finley Watson, Matthew Drimmie and Roode’s second all came in 1:30, leading the Lakers to a 4-3 first.
After Keaton Zavitz opened the second five minutes in, special teams ruled the middle period. Roode’s hat trick was scored on the power play, followed by Frank Coyle scoring shorthanded. Thunder Hill added a power play marker for the As, who would net a third in the final minute to tie the game 6-6 after two.
The game wasn’t tied for long as St Catharines had a two goal lead just over a minute into the third thanks to goals from Issac Prantera and Noah Simpson 16 seconds apart. Roode’s fourth of the game started a three-goal Lakers run, which would set up Nate Sage’s eventual game-winning goal with 2:29 to play. Peterborough wins back-to-back games for just the second time this season.
Nicholas Roode’s four goals matches a career high set earlier this season. He was the only multi-goal scorer for the Lakers. Rookie Colby Wood (1+3) and Michael Blaymires (0+4) also had four points.
In his second game in St Catharines Thunder Hill scored twice, adding three assists, giving him nine points (4+5) in two games with the As. Keaton Zavitz (1+3) finished with four points.
